BEFORE THE FALL

🌙 In Search of True Color Sergei Prokudin-Gorsky’s Flawed Images

Some methods of producing art are just absolutely tried and true! One particular in house favorite goes back over 100 years ago! Cool!! Give welcome to Sergey Prokudin-Gorsky, a Russian chemist and photographer. He captured pictures of Russia and surrounding states in ways that boggle the mind. Born of nobility, his family at one point moved to St. Petersburg where there Sergey enrolled in the State Institute of Technology. One of his professors who taught him was Dmitri Mendeleev, often regarded as the father of the Periodic Table, Mendeleev himself called his table, or matrix, the Periodic System. Sergey also studied in Berlin under Adolf Miethe. This dude not only co-invent the first photographic magnesium powder flash-light, but he also worked with a cabinet maker to build a color camera. On top of that, he made “Ethyl Red”, which allowed for easier developing of red screens.

  3. Three In One – He wasn’t the first to capture color photos, but he’s got the applied technique. It all comes down to separating colors with using filters. It’s science baby!
  4. Multi Colored Water – More about how the process works, it’s all about that projection baby! Digital techniques do offer a closer look as to reality than the hand imposed photos of the times. Look closely for the various shades of colors from moving objects.

🌙 About the Prokudin-Gorskii Collection

  • The Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii Collection features color photographic surveys of the vast Russian Empire made between ca. 1905 and 1915. Frequent subjects among the 2,607 distinct images include people, religious architecture, historic sites, industry and agriculture, public works construction, scenes along water and railway transportation routes, and views of villages and cities.
  • An active photographer and scientist, Prokudin-Gorskii (1863-1944) undertook most of his ambitious color documentary project from 1909 to 1915.
  • The Library of Congress purchased the collection from the photographer’s sons in 1948.

⭐ The Autochrome; Color photos? Just add potatoes.

  1. BLAM Colorvision! – Thomas Young and Hermann von Helmholtz helped lay the vision out for…well color vision.
  2. RGB – Leap frogging off this idea that we process color using three main wavelengths, Maxwell set out to reproduce this phenomenon using three color filters. He may have had a little help getting the project going.

⭐ BBC Pioneers Of Photography (1974) Early colour

  1. Such A Sensation – Looking at some other methods, we come to the Lumiere family (patenting a cinématographe, or a three-in-one device that could record, develop, and project motion pictures) and how they spearheaded color photography. Louis Arthur Ducos du Hauron helped with his process of superimposing images printed in red, yellow, and blue.
  2. Just Add Potatoes – Pretty wild how reality can be recorded with a potato.
